Ruakaka Operational Support

The Ruakaka Volunteer Fire Brigade has been in existence since 1967. An integral part of the brigade is the Ruakaka Operational Support unit.
The Brigade's area of responsibility covers the sea side settlement of Ruakaka, approximately 25 minutes drive south of Whangarei. Their fire district has State Highway 1 running right through it, as well as kilometres of DOC land along the beaches as well as much scrub land, which all add to the fire risk. This fast growing area includes a burgeoning industrial site made up of a 3 berth port, Carter Holt Harvey LVL timber plant, 5 saw mills, New Zealand's only oil refinery and other companies.
Ruakaka Fire Brigade respond to around 100 - 130 calls per year, but like most brigades, that number is steadily rising as population increases and the area is more developed. The Operational Support's 2007 Ford Transit van is kitted out with the appropriate equipment, including lighting sets, generator, kitty litter, first aid gear to support the brigade's two appliances, being one pump and one rescue tender.
